An Introduction to the Mahasi Technique
The Mahasi technique is a form of Vipassana (insight meditation.) It is a specific technique designed to stop mental proliferation and to quieten the mind. The technique uses noting words to limit the thinking process. It brings us back into a state of a gentle acceptance of whatever arises in the mind and encourages present moment awareness. The day will consist of opportunities to meditate together, learn from each other, talks and a question and answer session. Jenny Birkett has been practising meditation in the Theravadan tradition for over 25 years. She first started attending weekly meditation classes at the age of sixteen. This prompted a lifelong interest and passion in Buddhism. Jenny conducts a sitting group in London as well as teaching private clients. She has previously teaches at Satipanya Buddhist Centre in the UK and has been trained in teaching MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) at Oxford Mindfulness Centre. Jenny is particularly interested in introducing the Mahasi technique in schools and is currently working as a Primary School teacher in London, where she facilitates teaching the Mahasi method to young learners. |
